Rapid detoxification requires heavy sedation along with the use of opioid antagonists. This method is dangerous, ineffective, and expensive. These protocols are not standard medical detoxification protocols and have been evaluated for their effectiveness in managing opioid withdrawal.
In the first US trial of this kind, patients suffering from severe opioid addiction will be given brain implants to reduce their cravings. First, a series of brain scans are performed. Following the scans, doctors will create a small opening in the skull to insert an electrode of 1 mm into the area of brain that regulates impulses. This treatment is available to those who have exhausted all other treatments, including medicine, behavioral therapy and/or social intervention. Researchers have a variety of models to help them understand how addictions develop. There are four main Behavioral Models that can be used to describe addiction: the Moral Model of addiction, Disease Model of addiction, SocioCultural Model of addictive, and Psycho-dynamic Model. According to the Moral Model for addiction, addiction can be viewed as a moral weakness. Addiction is then attributed solely to the person. Moral Model supporters see drug abuse as a choice for anyone, even those who are addicted. Addicts, on the other hand, are seen as people with bad character. Substance abuse is defined as a 'chronic relapsing illness that affects the structure or function of the brain' according to the Disease Model. Research on the neurobiological components of addiction has yielded mixed results. Abstinence is the only viable treatment. Socio-Cultural models attempt to explain why certain groups are more susceptible than others to substance abuse. It looks at how the marginalized can become more susceptible to addiction due to discrimination, poor life quality, low opportunity and other problems. Psycho-Dynamic modeling considers trauma and mental illness as precursors to addiction. Many rehab centers specialize in treating "co-occurring disorders", which are substance abuse disorders that occur alongside a mental illness.
